Second Book of the Club (October): Breakdown by Cathy Sweeney

Our October selection is Breakdown by Irish author Cathy Sweeney, said to be a haunting and beautifully written novel about identity, transformation, and the quiet unraveling of everyday life.

“The story begins on a winter morning in contemporary Dublin, where a middle-class woman wakes up beside her husband — and, without any clear reason, walks out the front door. What follows is a strange and compelling journey of self-discovery that leads her toward profound change.”

This month’s pick was inspired by my growing interest in stories about motherhood, identity, and womanhood. I’m 33 and have been exploring themes of motherhood in my own writing. When I came across a thought-provoking excerpt from this book online, I couldn’t resist wanting to read more. The story triggers something within.

List whatever comes to mind.

If you could ask the protagonist some questions, which questions would you ask?

Ouuuf, I’m curious to see how Breakdown resonates with all of us.
